Let me honor your furry family members and friends with a unique painted colored pencil portrait! Our pets mean the world to us, I will take great care to create a portrait that will last a lifetime. A beautiful portrait takes time, from layering colors to develop rich tones, to matching fur patterns and intricacies unique to each animal. Because of this, turn around times can vary, so please book ahead!
Some required reading BEFORE booking:
1. Reference Photo
A high resolution photo is requested so I can produce the best portrait possible. However you are welcome to send multiple favorite photos to help me capture the personality of your pet. Once we confirm a photo we can proceed with booking a slot and timescale for completion of your pet portrait! If you're not sure you have a high quality photo, feel free to email me a copy before purchasing and I will confirm that we have enough to work with to achieve desired results. A bad/low quality photo = less details to work from. Email questions to swordfernstudios@gmail.com or use the contact form on the site.
2. Payment
A full deposit must be made to secure your booking. I will share updates and the final with you to make sure you're happy with your new portrait before sending it off!
3. Process.
Once we have found the right photo and booked, I will begin creating the portrait!
Materials I typically use:
- 9x12 archival white 100% cotton hot pressed paper.
- Colored pencils, I use two different brands for different techniques.
- Gamsol solvent/paintbrush/sponge
*I am also happy to use pastels on hardboard for a more painterly look.
"I forage for mushrooms in the Cascades and areas around Bend and Michelle's eye for depicting mushrooms in her art is spot on."
"Perfect length, great quality, the print is beautiful and I get compliments on it all the time."

Artist, Owner
Sword Fern Studios features art created by Michelle F Mitchell.
Hi, I'm Michelle, a lifelong artist and creative. In college I studied photography and received my BFA. After the grind of the commercial photo industry for many years I am called return to my practice of traditional art.
I enjoy creating finely detailed, highly textured work that captures my love of nature and especially mycology. My goal is to educate others about our local fungi, flora, and fauna in the Pacific Northwest and inspire others to appreciate the small gifts nature provides.
Thanks, Michelle
